About the Author:
Born in Aleppo, Syria near the area of the Shomar and Thai tribes, Bachir Bserani s passion for horses was passed to him through his father, a cavalry member who often traveled on horseback through the regions of Deir el Zoor, Hasakeh, and Hama. From a young age Bachir was naturally drawn to horses. He traveled many journeys with his father, visiting the Bedouin tribes to solve a problem, or to discuss a bargain or two. As a young boy he always, as is the custom in the desert, watched and listened to the elders, but never asked questions except to his father. And it is through these travels during the scorching daytime heat of the desert, and from beneath the bright stars in the cool desert evening that his knowledge about Arabian horses came to him. In 1970 Bachir arrived in the United States, married, and in 1973 was told that he was entitled to U.S. citizenship. During the process of obtaining US citizenship Bachir was asked to change his name to a common American name. Of course he politely declined to change his name, as what name could compare to the beautiful name given by his parents ... Bachir (The One Who Brings Good News). He would keep his birth name, and speak his name with pride of his heritage and of the Arabian Desert from where he was born. Bachir s first book Authentic Arabian Horse Names by Bachir Bserani with Kellie Kolodziejczyk was published in 2004. In 2008 he released a self titled companion audio CD based on the Arabic-English section of this book. On the CD Bachir recites each name individually in his native Arabic tongue and then gives the English translation. Other credits include educational seminars and articles on the Bedouin tradition of naming foals. On occasion, Bachir will make appearances for book signings at various Arabian horse and Saluki dog events.
Review:
What a beautiful book! From the covers, both front and back, to the stories, the photographs and illustrations, and the comprehensive list of names; it is a resource I am proud to own. I am especially proud to have been a contributor, even in such a small way. I believe this book should be considered an essential tool for every breeder of Arabian horses and I thank Bachir and Kellie for their hard work and dedication in producing such a masterpiece. Thank you both for the book. I LOVED being a part of it and the inscriptions you both wrote in our copy. Thank you so much!!! The long-awaited follow up to the successful 2004 book Authentic Arabian Horse Names, this latest volume is fully extended and expanded, as well as including a selection of beautiful stories from the Middle Eastern Desert. The only book available in English which allows breeders to select the name of their foal based on traits, both in the male and female, Authentic Arabian Horse Names Volume II also allows researchers to learn the meaning of their Arabian horse s name. What makes this volume so special are the tales; from The Bedouin Custom of Naming the Arabian Horse, author Bachir Bserani takes us on a journey through Arabia through a life shared with horses. Of particular interest is the feature on The Arabian Dancing Horse, which tells of the history of this remarkable feat. Also, staying true to the intentions of the book, Guidelines to Follow when Choosing an Arabian Name is invaluable; did you know, for example, that it is considered bad luck to name a foal before it is born? If you enjoyed the first volume, then this surpasses its offering. Beautifully illustrated throughout with paintings of Arabian horses, this hardback book covers over 200 pages. More of a complete guide to the Bedouin and their horses, this new edition is certainly worth buying and with foaling season just around the corner, the timing couldn t be better to add this to your collection. Absolutely fantastic books and beautiful enough to add to any collection! The history and stories contained in each book make them wonderful to read from start to finish. When you reach the names list they provide not only the name with translation, but they also provide pronunciation! I have never before seen all of this information provided in one location. I think that these books will allow breeders everywhere to finally start using authentic names more often and with confidence. Thank you for providing this wonderful resource!!!
