Synopsis

He travels their paths by mixing and intermixing Past, Present and Future via excursions into: high-technology s new drugs and agencies; a historical look into a primitive science that s become Rheumatology; Fads and Fallacies for therapeutic treatment of arthritis; detailed inspection of the clinical advances of the 1890s, the first half of the 20th century and then an inspection of each decade from 1950 to 2005; clinical histories of scores of famous drugs and herbal-hopefuls from aspirin to Cortisone to gold to DMSO to Thalidomide to Acupuncture and finally to DMARDs, NSAIDs and today's high-promise Anti-TNFs and VIOXX. He asks: "If the cause of arthritis is truly being found within joint tissue, does that point a way to discovering what causes infections and, more importantly, what causes cancer?"
