Synopsis
Self-Rising Flowers is a collection of fictional short stories about the lives of women who make their homes in the Appalachian Mountains. Written by fifteen Appalachian women authors, about Appalachian women, these stories reflect on the theme of struggle and triumph. These works depict the strength and wit of mountain women; some from decades past, others from contemporary times. When faced with adversity, these women choose to forge ahead and overcome their troubles. The stories told in Self-Rising Flowers portray women who possess the qualities it takes to be considered a "mountain girl." Just like the 2006 short story collection, The Zinnia Tales, this group of stories embodies the Mountain Girl Press mission statement: Fiction that celebrates the wit, humor, and strength of Appalachian women.
