About the Author:
Theresa C. Vara grew up in the Bronx and was educated at Manhattan College, New York Law School and Wesleyan University. She and Mary Donnarumma Sharnick are Editors of The Litchfield Review, an international literary magazine. She is an English teacher of high school students in Connecticut and all her students are extraordinary.
Review:
"Watchful and passionate, these poems remind us that a poet may be born anywhere. A child who wakes to the power of her own senses in a Bronx walk-up and does not turn from what she sees and hears becomes our guide, registering scenes of betrayal and defeat and then of sweet and profligate love. We trust this voice as a life unfolds through this sequence of poems, telling us the stories we always need to hear-how the human heart survives." --Patricia Klindienst, author of The Earth Knows My Name

"In Profligate with Love, Theresa C. Vara paints a portrait of childhood sorrows: she is furious with the father who 'exhales his poisons' and causes her mother to 'choke down the slop of humiliation in smothered silence.' Vara longs for the kind of caress her cousins receive from an uncle 'so profligate with love.' These are poems that evoke a feel of palpable loss-heartaches of the women of Srebenica whose men were massacred, of the African American father who must bury his son under the road, and of the poet herself, whose children 'leave behind those they first fevered sought.' Vara has penned a poignant collection of verses: it encapsulates a lifetime of heart-felt emotions and moves us with its honesty." --Patricia D'Ascoli, publisher of The Connecticut Muse

"Throughout this book, Vara creates images and sounds with enormous skill and imagination, moving from beautifully crafted free verse to form-two elegant sonnets in particular-with ease and confidence. This is a poet who pays attention, and the results are heartbreaking and heartening at the same time. Love breaks us but also heals us, and this poet's wonderfully 'profligate' sharing of this truth shimmers and blazes on every page." --Edwina Trentham author of Stumbling into the Light
