Excerpt from the Introduction (by Dr Scott Conard)
In writing this book
...It takes time for a person to step into a resourceful and empowered relationship with a chronic disease. David was no exception. His personal journey while writing this book parallels the fictional character of the story: The ups and downs, the breakthroughs - all which lead to the character's pursuits of his life purpose, and his experience of health and wellbeing.
It is in this spirit that David and I have written this book. If you have diabetes or another chronic condition, we hope that you too will experience the power that TED* delivers in life.
As you take your Baby Steps and see the flow of your life continually improve, we hope you will share your success with others and let us know the vitality and joy that you experience.
Committed to your success,
Scott Conard, M.D.
Excerpts from the Afterword (by David Emerald)
Meeting Dr. Scott Conard
Little did I know that this would be the first book in applying The Power of TED* (*The Empowerment Dynamic) to various aspects of life. Indeed, little did I know that a few months after completing the writing of TED* in late 2005, I would receive the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
While Joe is a fictional character, some of his experience is based upon my own. When my doctor - upon whom Joe's first doctor is not based - first informed me of needing to confront diabetes, I initially rejected his suggestion of going on medication. I was convinced I could fight the disease through diet and exercise. I did, to a point (more on that in a moment).
In early 2007 I was invited to deliver one of the first TED* presentations and workshops to a leadership program in which one of the participants was Dr. Scott Conard. Participants in this graduate leadership program had been given The Power of TED* in advance. I distinctly remember Scott telling me the positive impact the book had in his life and medical practice...
My Relationship with My Diabetes
...I rode the roller coaster of results in the Victim Orientation. Diabetes was my Persecutor and I its Victim. For a time I would take focused action, the numbers would come down and - especially using the fact that I was taking medication as a Rescuer from the disease - I would slack off after seeing success. Of course, in slacking, the numbers would again increase. The good news is that they were still almost always "in range" for managing diabetes.
Then in early 2011, Donna (my wife and business partner) and I had an auspicious lunch conversation with Dr. Scott. About halfway through, he turned to me and asked, yet again, "When are we going to write that book on TED* and diabetes?" He then turned to Donna and said to her, "I have only been after him for years about this!"
To my own surprise I replied, "I'm ready. Let's do it."...
...But something else happened. As we began to write, I realized that I was out of integrity with my own work. The realization gnawed at me as I came to see how much the managing and relating to my diabetes was rooted in that Victim Orientation.
I declared to Donna that I needed to - that I chose to - shift my focus to a Creator Orientation and that what I wanted was to create health in my life...
This I know
...This book is not intended to be a "primer" on diabetes. There is plenty of good information available from a wide variety of resources on the medical science and physiology of diabetes.
In fact, I am not an expert in the science - not by a long shot. Dr. Scott and Roy (who is one of the most knowledgeable and "activated patients" you would ever know) are much more knowledgeable than me.
This I do know: by focusing on creating health, making healthy choices and taking daily Baby Steps, vitality and wellbeing are attainable. We may not be able to cure what ails us, but we can heal in remarkable ways.
To the Creator in you!

From the Inside Flap:
"David Emerald's 'The Empowerment Dynamic' (TED*) framework is one of the simplest, most powerful models I know of for optimal living. In TED* for Diabetes, David and Dr. Conard apply this framework to one of the greatest health challenges facing our world today -- providing the inspiration and tools for everyone suffering from diabetes to shift and respond to the challenge as a Creator rather than as a Victim. If you'd like to optimize your health rather than just slow down the illness, this book is for you!" Brian Johnson, Philosopher & CEO of en*theos Academy for Optimal Living; creator of Philosopher's Notes
"TED for Diabetes takes the mystery out of empowering self and others. Personal empowerment is the missing active ingredient for optimal health, healthcare reform, the activated patient, the elimination of health disparities and the promotion of healthy literacy. If you want to get healthy, effectively support a person living with diabetes or just get a life, this transformative little book is the place to start." Sandra Smith, PhD, MPH, Executive Director, Center for Health Literacy Promotion
"This book is more effective than having a personal chef and health coach live with you, better than a month long yoga retreat in Bali, and yes, better than a magic pill to fix whatever ails you. Why? Because the TED* framework changes you, from the inside, releasing the inner power you need to create optimal health. Reading this book will help you hold onto and express that power. That, my friend, is deep, true health." Jennifer Louden, author of The Woman's Comfort Book and The Life Organizer
