A Legacy of Distinction-The First 100 Years is a celebration of the Kinakid School - Houston's largest, oldest, independent school. Not only is the centennial book beautiful and creative but it also gives a unique look into the fascinating history of the school which parallels that of the City of Houston. As the school grew from a small gathering of students in the dining room of Mrs. Margaret Hunter Kinkaid's house to one of the finest independent private schools in the country so Houston has grown from a small Texas city to one of the most successful, prosperous cities in the nation. Many of Houston's founding families have had a close relationship with the school, and some of the accomplishments and contributions of a select group of its alumni, faculty and staff are profiled in the book. Kinkaid's alumni include leaders from coast to coast who are making a difference in changing our world for the better; President George Bush is a Kinkaid alumnus. Margaret Kinkaid contributed significantly to the betterment and directions of independent school education in Texas. Barred from teaching in the public school system because she was married, Mrs. Kinkaid undertook the challenge to open a school of her own. She sought to establish a school that would educate the "whole child". She beleived in educating the "whole child"; she stressed the importance of math and science for female students, and later on, she established Houston's first vertically integrated course of study for students in grades K through 12. The school's history as well as the story of Margaret Kinkaid are significant not only to Houston's past but also to its future.
