From the Intro to Denim Design Lab:
The beauty is in the details. It is the subtlest of details that attract true denim aficionados to one pair over another. The ultimate display of detail is found in true vintage denim. Study (if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one) a pair of original Levi's 501XX jeans or other vintage styles that have been worn for years. The story of each wearer has been indelibly recorded on each pair.
Particular abrasion patterns, locations of wear and whiskering are tell tale signs of what each pair has lived through. Varying amounts of creasing and whiskering, and their location, are indicative of wearers who sat or crouched frequently. Clean, dark indigo, with little evidence of wear could be indicative of wearers who worked on their feet all day, likely indoors. Stains are further evidence of the type of life the wearer led. Grease and oil stains from the mechanic, paint drips and chalk smears from the painter, bleach stains from the laundry worker
The book "Denim Design Lab " is a tribute to the beauty of denim. The ageless fabric used to produce blue jeans, which, like fine wine, continues to get better with age. The "Denim Design Lab " kit provides both a roadmap and the basic tools necessary to recreate many of the most common wear and stain details found in authentic vintage denim, as well as some of the most expensive vintage inspired styles currently being sold at retail.
Make no mistake about it, the process of recreating these looks is neither easy nor quick. The majority of work that goes into aging denim is done by hand. Some recreations of vintage originals can take up to five days of work to produce. However, for those who appreciate the level of detail and originality that can be achieved by following the right techniques and putting in the time, your efforts will be rewarded with truly original, one of a kind denim styles.
Before embarking on your first creative endeavor, take the time to learn and appreciate denim's rich history and the detailed processes involved in bringing a pair of denim jeans to life.
In the pages that follow, you will learn about the history of both denim jeans and denim fabric, take a look under the hood of two of the most famous jeans in history, and learn about the process involved in making denim fabric and finished denim jeans a reality.
Once you have a firm grasp of denim's past and present, you can then start to contribute to its future. The roadmap outlined in these pages may be just the spark you need to start you on your way in creating your single most treasured denim masterpiece, or even the next big trend in denim.
