Otsu was the legendary lover of Japan's greatest swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi left her behind as he embarked on a quest for the spiritual purity befitting a samurai. The poem "Otsu" is her lament. Erupting with passion and sumptuous imagery reminiscent of the poetry of Pablo Neruda, "Otsu" is not only a love poem, but also a reflection on contemporary Western culture, in which the ideals of truth and conviction have been muffled by an Eastern relativism. The shorter, more formal poems which follow "Otsu" are quiet yet powerful aftershocks, echoing her ascent--or collapse--into nothingness.
