Synopsis

Meticulously annotating a wide spectrum of historical detail, historian, author, and family tree research enthusiast Robert L. Johnson uses broad strokes to masterfully paint an ancestral panorama of events re-lated to the Rhys (pronounced “Rice”) family, from which he and a host of others have descended. From ancient Celtic roots in Wales to contemporary Michigan where he now resides, Mr. Johnson traces the Rhys tradition for all to glean and enjoy. An excerpt from chapter 12, Emigrants, is pivotal: “For the many who were able, the political, religious, educational, and financial conditions of the times gave more than ample reason to leave England and Wales. In addition to both Catholic and Protestant refugees (including the Pilgrims and Quakers) emigrating from England and Wales to Ireland, Holland, and northern France (Brittany), there were many others looking for a better life in prosperous Netherlands. “And from there, facilitated by the large Dutch shipping empire, it became possible to go anywhere in the known world, including America.”

About the Author

As a graduate of Michigan State University in Chemical Engineering and a Professional Engineer, State of Michigan, Robert Johnson has had extensive writing experience in the technical field related to the power industry. He retired from Consumers Energy Company in 1981. Mr. Johnson’s interest in European history stems from his military service as an officer in the army, European-Middle East Theater (Africa-Italy), during World War II and subsequent military reserve activity. For a period of ten years during the cold war era, Mr. Johnson served in an appointed capacity on a commission in CIOR (Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers), an affiliate of NATO. His family history credentials grew out of his passionate hobby of preparing family tree charts which in turn led to his authorship of two publications: The Zeiger Centennial Farm and The Turiansky Legacy. Mr. Johnson is listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in the Midwest, 1981–1982 and Personalities in America, 1985. Says Johnson, “This book is not only intended to record ‘from whence we came’ but also some of the gifts and talents belonging to our ancestors and their families, many of which were used to glorify God. It is an inspiration to note the great strengths of the Welsh people—who could not be subjugated by the English Crown—and also the quality of the Dutch and French people in our ancestry who came to America in their quest for religious freedom.
