There is a verifiable Christian labyrinth tradition dating back to the fourth century. It reached its height at Chartres Cathedral in France during the Middle Ages and then went dormant. For the past two decades churches have been rediscovering the labyrinth as an effective spiritual tool and reawakening this ancient tradition. This book was written in 2001 and recently updated. It contains five sections. The first is a series of questions and answers about church labyrinths, in the style of an interview. The second section is a collection of quotations from a variety of labyrinth books. Third is an annotated bibliography about Chartres Cathedral. Fourth is the reprint of an article by Robert D. Ferré entitled “Twelve Reasons Your Church Should Have a Labyrinth.” Fifth is a resource section with websites for additional information, including labyrinth builders. This book is one of five volumes in the Labyrinth Archive Series.

A full-time labyrinth maker since 1995, Robert Ferre has played a major role in the current labyrinth revival. Founder and president of Labyrinth Enterprises, LLC, Robert is involved in all aspects of labyrinth activity including consulting, design, training, lecturing, and making labyrinths, both portable and permanent. In 1997 and 1998, Robert organized the meetings in St. Louis which established the Labyrinth Society, an international organization that supports a wide range of labyrinth activity, including a listing of labyrinths worldwide. For more than a decade, Robert has been in demand as a keynote speaker and presenter on the subjects of labyrinths, Chartres Cathedral, and sacred geometry. With his crews of labyrinth artists, he travels widely to install labyrinths in hospitals, churches, schools, and other public and private spaces. Several times each year he gives master classes in labyrinth building and facilitator trainings. For 17 years, Robert led groups on pilgrimage to France, with emphasis on Chartres Cathedral, which he has visited 50 times. With regards to making labyrinths, Robert has invented most of the techniques and tools he utilizes, ranging from templates to use on canvas to diamond-bladed tools for scoring concrete. Robert served as co-editor for the English translation of Through the Labyrinth by Hermann Kern, a scholarly compendium written in 1982 and now updated. Besides the five books published through Labyrinth Enterprises, LLC, he has contributed to numerous other labyrinth books including illustrations, forewords, and quotations. Robert serves as webmaster for the extensive Labyrinth Enterprisess website, which is a major resource on labyrinths, with many articles, instructions, and free downloads plus more than 300 links to other labyrinth-related sites. Through his traveling, writing, and research, Robert stays on the leading edge of the labyrinth movement.
