Suddenly left on their own, the very survival of these pre teens depends upon non-Jewish neighbors and Partisans. In the rugged mountains of Yugoslavia they barely survive. After the war, they find their way to Palestine, marry, fight in the War of Independence, and try to get on with their lives until....Though separated by three millennia in time and set in totally different environments, the stories maintain a parallelism that is often stunning. The first story begins with the death of two brothers, while the second begins with the death of the parents of two brothers. The dramatic ending of each story brings, in an unexpected way, resolution and perhaps a sense of redemption.
