Synopsis
Land of the Morning Calm…A Lesson in Reality is a personal account of the Korean War. It is a day-by-day account of the author’s combat experience while serving on the front line with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea in 1952-53. The original manuscript took nearly 20 years to complete. It began as a few hand written notes with no real purpose other than to keep the author occupied during the long 17 day boat trip back to San Francisco in August 1953. After returning home, the author married, earned a college degree, and started a career and a family. Though delayed by all of life’s interruptions associated with raising 6 children, the manuscript was finally completed in the summer of 1972. The title comes from an English language nickname for Korea. The Chinese characters for Joseon (or Choson), the name derived from the Joseon Dynasty, were often translated into English as "morning calm", and Korea's English nickname became "The Land of the Morning Calm“. This nickname became widely accepted in the West after Percival Lowell’s book, "Choson, the Land of the Morning Calm," was published in 1885.
