This is an immensely hopeful book of bold and empowering ideas about healing and transforming couple relationships. Fully respectful of the ordinary, nitty-gritty aspects of daily life with its never ending stream of thoughts, feelings, habitual ego patterns and interpersonal interactions, this book directs our attention to a deeper, more soulful awareness of ourselves and our partner. From this deeper awareness, we are able to redefine and cultivate our relationship into an inspired, compassionate, loving partnership that directly supports the mutual awakening of each other. While many of the ideas in this book are compelling enough to invite thoughtful reflection, it is not a book just to read once, then put away on a bookshelf. It is intended to be used as a guidebook to lead couples through a systemic process that addresses the psychological and interpersonal aspects of relationship within the context of a shared spiritual practice of awakening. After providing a conceptual foundation for this approach, the book identifies the skills needed to ensure optimal success. It then guides the reader through a clear and sequential process for learning and applying the approach, providing helpful explanations and examples throughout. With a glossary of terms, and many helpful appendixes, it is quite user friendly.

Leland Baggett, MA, LPC, received a Master's degree in Humanistic Psychology from the University of West Georgia. He is past president of the North Carolina Mental Health Counselors Association (1982-1983), past president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology (2001-2002), and co-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology (2009 - 2010). In addition to maintaining a private psychotherapy practice for nearly three decades, Chip has served as a consultant, national speaker, and workshop presenter on topics that integrate psychological, interpersonal, and spiritual dimensions of being. His areas of expertise and experience range from Parenting as a Spiritual Practice, Radical Intimacy, and Spiritual Emergencies, to a variety of professional trainings in humanistic, existential, and transpersonal approaches to counseling and psychotherapy.
Waking Up Together is an inspiring and original contribution to the field of spirituality and relationships. Leland Baggett has brought forth a new voice that can help couples navigate the often treacherous waters present in the dynamics of relationships. By asking the central questions - What are we waking up from? and, What are we waking up into? - Baggett has named a central issue for couples who want to deepen their own spiritual work in the context of committed relationships. Recognizing, defining, and naming the importance of unconscious and conscious trances and their role in relationships is one of the central ideas in the book that can inspire couples into a practice that will allow an ever deepening commitment to the awakening joy and beauty inherent in all conscious relationships. I highly recommend this book and will use it in my classes at Holistic Studies. --Ray Greenleaf, Chair, Counseling Psychology, School of Holistic Studies, John F. Kennedy University
