About the Author:
John Ridland was born in London, England, in 1933 but has lived most of his life in California. For over forty years he taught literature and creative writing at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Visiting Hungary in 1987 he learned of the famous "folk epic" poem by Sandor Petofi which he translated as "John the Valiant,"published by the Corvina Press in 1999. His poems have appered in many journals and a dozen books and chapbooks, including "Ode on Violence," "And Say What He Is: The Life of a Special Child," "In the Shadowless Light," "Elegy for My Aunt," and "Life with Unkie." He has recently translated poems by the Hungarian writers Miklos Radnoti and Sandor Marai, and he is finishing a translation of the Middle English narrative "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight."
Review:
Ridland is a true magician. He plans to take us on a great journey, while in reality he simply spins us around on our own axis. Let someone else try to do this after him. --Petra Finy in "Figyolo" (Hungary)

Humor is one of the reigning characteristics of Ridland's poetic makeup, of his enire personality; perhaps there isn't a single form, mode, or degree of humor that hasn't appeared in his verse, from the bitter through the refined to the gentle. --Gyula Kodolanyi, Afterword to Europa Press edition.

The finest poems here are intimate, often sad and tender. ... He writes with quiet grace about a son lost at age 6, and about nostalgia he muses, "You are like a disease of the nerves/ when they are touched and inflamed/ beyond measure, heightened/as a cloudy sky by sunset/ rain."... When he chooses, Dr. Ridland can be a powerful observer of the natural world.... "A Brahms Card Ballad" offers a startlingly broad selection of poems and their forms from a quiet and highly accomplished voice. --Lin Rolens, review in Santa Barbara News-Press, April 15, 2007
