The Healing Muse is a collection of short stories, narrative, poetry, and visual art on the themes of illness, medicine and the body. The Muse creates a unique starting point for discussion by contextualizing these themes in narrative. This approach can help people who are experiencing illness, as well as their friends, family, and health care providers, to understand the personal, social, professional, and institutional complexities of healing.

The Healing Muse began in 2001 as an in-house literary journal for SUNY Upstate Medical University. Founding editor Bonnie St. Andrews saw the journal as the place where the science and the art of medicine would reveal their common purpose: to provide and witness healing, to analyze and accept the human experience in its commonality and its infinite variety. The Center for Bioethics and Humanities at SUNY Upstate Medical University, established through the generous support of the Medical Alumni Association, is committed to promoting health care which is patient-centered, compassionate, and just. We accomplish this through educational initiatives in bioethics and the medical humanities, clinical ethics consultation, multidisciplinary research and scholarly writing, and health policy analysis and advocacy.
