Synopsis

Calling All Plant Mentors! Do you feel a connection to the green world that surrounds us? If so, chances are good that you can point to a plant mentor, an insightful and friendly adult from your childhood who fostered your love of the land. Maybe you helped them in the garden or explored the woods with them. Did you press leaves or flowers? Crack hickory nuts? Turn Queen Anne’s Lace pink and blue on a diet of colored water? This book is about how plants work and the connections between them and other living things, including us humans. It’s for you the grown-up and that special young one – or the kid in you -- with whom you want to explore the beauty, wonder, and importance of plants. George Ramseur, botany professor for years at Sewanee: the University of the South, was plant mentor to decades of college students. He kept them thinking by asking questions like, “What if plants could walk?” Inspired by George, this book is full of questions. There are answers, too, to help satisfy your curious nature and make you a more knowledgeable plant mentor. And you’ll find a variety of activities, guided experiences with plants and their communities, to open the door to discovery. So come take a walk with George. Bring your curiosity and that budding naturalist with you to explore together the fascinating kingdom of Plants.
