In the spring of 1942, at age 22, Baine Kerr was called to active duty as a 2nd lieutenant in the Marine Corps. For almost two years he participated in some of the Marines' bloodiest engagements in the Pacific: on Guadalcanal, where he was hit by Japanese machine-gun fire, and Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, and Tinian. This memoir of his wartime experiences is the result of a series of interviews recorded in 2004 and 2005. Notwithstanding the passage of some 60 years, his recollections were remarkably fresh and rich in detail. Edited into a chronological sequence, they are presented as a deeply personal telling of his story in his own words.
