About the Author:
Book author John Potash did his graduate studies at Columbia University where he concentrated in community organizing. He was founding publisher/editor of Social Justice Action Quarterly a national social work school newspaper that lasted four years and won four honors in the Campus Alternative Journalism Awards. He also received a certification in acupuncture drug treatment at Mutulu Shakur s former clinic, Lincoln Detox, in the Bronx. While mostly working as an addictions counselor, he has published articles (Z, Covert Action, Baltimore Chronicle), poems and short stories. Foreward Author: Pam Africa is Minister of Confrontation for the MOVE Organization. She is also the Co-Coordinator of the International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal. She has further been featured on national television and radio programs. Foreword Contributor: Mumia Abu-Jamal (pictured on cover and discussed in Chapter 17) was a founding Minister of Information for the Philadelphia Black Panther Party. He then worked as a radio journalist for National Public Radio, winning the Peabody Award for outstanding journalism. He further published articles in prestigious media such as the Yale Law Journal, consistently covering leftist activist issues. After the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists elected Mumia their chair, he was shot in 1981. Mumia has written several essays a week which have been recorded and broadcasted on radio stations around the country by prisonradio.org. Afterword Author: Fred Hampton, Jr. (pictured on cover and discussed in Chapter 13) is the son of Fred Hampton, Sr., the famed Illinois Black Panther Party leader who was next in line to be on the Central Committee and as a national Panther spokesman. In 1990, Hampton became the president of the International People s Democratic Uhuru Movement. He is currently chairman of the Prisoners of Conscience Committee (POCC). Hampton has been featured in the documentary Dave Chappelle s Block Party.
