My nephew is in his senior year in high school, and after working with college students for some time, I started thinking about his upcoming journey into college. I wondered if someone had talked to him about the entire experience. I wanted to know if my brother and sister-in-law had prepared him for all the stuff beyond laundry and cooking. I will admit, I am not like most aunts. I don't just do the obligatory holiday and birthday present. As my first nephew prepares to go off to college, I wanted to make sure that this brilliant, full-of-life 18-year-old was prepared. Knowing his parents were also trying to offer advice, I began to think about all of the things I wanted him to consider. We had a few awkward conversations, but it was clear there were a number of things I wanted him to know - even the tough and awkward stuff. I wanted to be mindful, thoughtful, conscientious, and intentional along the way. More importantly, I want him to be a confident and assured leader. The decision to write this book was easy, and the ideas came quickly. Within less than 24 hours, I started to reach out to all of my colleagues who have expertise in so many areas of the collegiate experience in order to gather the wisdom. I am not an expert in each of these core areas, but I am well connected, and I know that knowledge is power. My hope is that with the insight of all of these experts, we will prepare the next generation of college students for a higher rate of success. I don't want them to survive college. I want them to leave with a rich experience.
