Synopsis

Faced with the disastrous aftermath of the Iraq war, the new President of the United States is faced with the problem of rebuilding public confidence in its Government and re-asserting its influence and prestige in a world that is increasingly suspicious of its motives, its methods and, above all, a military machine that appears eager for an opportunity to restore its damaged pride. Across the pond, the British people, no longer willing to automatically march to the insistent beat of their US ally s drum, are increasingly drawn to a radical politician whose vocal support of unilateral disarmament has long consigned him to the extremist fringes of his party. His vision of a revolutionary New Democracy and an economic and social transformation as the result of demilitarization is suddenly generating popular support with the British people and shudders within the US Administration. How will the US respond to a rising resentment against its presence in Britain and even popular attacks on its bases and servicemen generated by the changing political climate and insensitive blunders by its military commanders? Will it accept the loss of its huge UK military bases and assets and Britain s withdrawal from its much-vaunted coalition? Or will it insist on its national interests and its role as the self-declared champion of the war on terror taking precedence over those of its traditional ally - and once more throw the world into political and even military - turmoil? This is not only a story of political leaders whose job it is to make tough decisions in tough circumstances. It is about events that take place in a small and inconsequential village in rural England and the ordinary people whose experiences drive an international crisis and who are reluctantly forced to choose between conflicting loyalties to their country, their conscience and those that they love as they are suddenly overwhelmed by a crisis that escalates out of control around them. The saga takes us

About the Author

Jeff Davies learned about life in the backstreets of the British Black Country named because of the black soot and coal dust that covered much of the area as a result of coal mining and heavy industrialization. His early life is epitomized by the weekly bath in a metal tub that hung on an outside wall and, every Saturday evening, was dragged in front of the living room coal fire where the water was heated in a large bucket. As the youngest family member, he was last in line to use the water... Forced to leave school on his fifteenth birthday, hard work in heavy industry to provide the basics of life became the focus of his world and it was many years before he had earned enough to enjoy the luxury of further education, a master s degree in business management and wider opportunities. He went on to develop a successful career as a business and computer consultant interspersed with some interesting jobs that included managing industrial relations on large engineering construction sites; developing medical and diagnostic systems with the Royal College of General Practitioners; operations management in the offshore drilling industry; developing and managing commodity trading systems; and running a yacht charter and brokerage business in the Mediterranean. He is a member of Mensa International and his insatiable curiosity and varied, down-to-earth background provide a rich, humorous and diverse view of life. He has traveled extensively and currently lives in Florida with his wife, Manuela. They share a passion for tennis and travel photography that has recently taken them to France, Spain, Germany, Holland, Monaco, England, Iceland, China and Australia (see www.doubleXposure.com). Jeff keeps busy as a web designer and software developer as well as with writing and would like to spend more time telling the world what he thinks of it at www.swineofthetimes.com...
