To honor their uncle, Charles Mingus, Jr., two nieces of the legendary jazz figure have compiled a unique collection of art and prose, Art and Soul of Jazz: A tribute to Charles Mingus, Jr., The author and artist are the daughters of Mingus's oldest sister, the late Vivian Mingus Myles. The book contains 91 biographical profiles and original portraits--paintings and drawings--of important jazz artists. The profiles, written by Alicia Schooler-Hugg, a writer, educator and registered nurse, are concise, chronologically sequenced, and reflect the featured artist's connection to Mingus and the evolution of jazz. Each original portrait--paintings and drawings--by Carol Bowie, a well-known Central California Coast artist, was completed while Bowie listened to and drew inspiration from the featured musician. In his foreword, Clint Eastwood states the book is destined to become a staple in the collection of serious jazz enthusiasts. The Mingus sisters, Vivian and Grace Mingus Washington, have contributed rare insights into the Mingus persona, as has living jazz legend Buddy Collette, Mingus's childhood mentor and lifelong friend. Saxophonist Charles McPherson, whose 12-year tenure with Mingus was exceeded only by that of drummer Dannie Richmond, has also endorsed the book and provided an insightful memoir of his time with Mingus. McPherson was the featured alto saxophonist on the soundtrack of Eastwood's 1988 biographic movie, Bird.
