This volume accompanies the debut touring exhibition of the permanent collection of the Demuth Museum, established in 1981 in the former home and studio of American modernist Charles Demuth (1883-1935) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Demuth Museum offers a wholly unique experience of Demuth's artistic life and groundbreaking works through its collections, exhibitions and programs. Containing over thirty Demuth works, the permanent collection is complemented by the rich holdings of the archive and library, including early Demuth family photographs and correspondence between the artist and his contemporaries. The Demuth Tobacco Shop, the family business established in 1770 and the oldest shop of its kind in America, is also part of the museum complex. In the nearby city, Demuth's architectural subjects can still be seen and just outside his studio window, his mother Augusta's garden is cultivated with many of the same flowers and plants that inspired his work. Out of the Chateau: Works from the Demuth Museum is the first comprehensive publication of any museum's holdings of Demuth s art. In this catalogue, Demuth Museum Executive Director Anne M. Lampe discusses Demuth's contributions to early American modernism, along with the artist's unique relationship with his native Lancaster. Also included are an updated selected exhibition history and bibliography, which are the first in twenty years to be published on Demuth.
