Synopsis
On the field of Kurukshetra, an unnamed cadet takes part in the epic battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas. Like Arjuna, the cadet does not want to go to war, but he has no Sri Krishna for counsel. Or has he? At one point in the battle, he becomes separated from the other cadets and is given a revelation: there is no world and God is All. But is that reassuring? Doesn t that mean he does not exist? The cadet returns to the fray, with reticence, and eventually becomes a nurse, a step up in consciousness, but apparently not large enough, for when he is given a second vision of Truth, he rejects it. He paddles on.

NO remainder marks. [From Colophon] 'Elixir Refused', a hand-painted book by Ward Schumaker, was created in 2005 with colored paste on Somerset Velvet (an English mouldmade paper), pages 13" x 20", with a binding by John DeMerritt. The artist thanks Christopher Irion for making the photographs of the original, and Rand Schumaker for introducing him to Eknath Easwaran's translation of the 'Bhagavad Gita'. Published on the occasion of the exhibition, 'I am Big Heaven', June 2007, at Stir Gallery, Shanghai. The book is an offset printed reproduction of one-of-a-kind hand-painted book which was exhibited by the artist: "I am Big Heaven" in 2007 at the Stir Gallery, Shanghai.
