"One Man Against the Mountain" is a slightly fictionalized account of an outdoorsman's quest to prove that he could survive through a winter at high elevations in the Big Horn Mountains near Sheridan, Wyoming. Living in a canvas tent, relying on supplies he had brought in on horseback the previous fall and occasional help from people who had told him he was crazy to try this quest, he not only survived but learned a lot about himself and the generosity of others. Danny Longwell, a Sheridan, Wyoming, resident and his two dogs lived through brutal subzero temperatures and deadly blizards, cutting wood to fire the small wood stove that kept the temperature inside the tent survivable. Longwell kept a journal of his adventure, and excerpts from the journal are used throughout the book, as well as photographs he took during his time on 'the mountain.'

From the Inside Flap:
"To prove them wrong ..." This story isn't just about a man's struggle to survive a brutal Walker Prarie winter in a canvas tent. It's also about Danny Longwell's struggles within himself; his feelings about his overly strict father; his feelings about death; his lack of self-confidence; and his battles with loneliness.Through the brutally cold, stormy winter, as he labors to keep warm and meditates on his life and his santiy for this undertaking, he slowly comes to an understanding regarding himself and others.
