PERFECT FOR LINE MANAGERS. 100 pages. Explains the basic principles of hiring in a short, entertaining storybook format. Written by a line manager who also built a multi-million dollar company focused on hiring. Every leader knows great people are the key to success. However, few of them really understand how to find the top quality people they need. Better Hires, Fewer Fires tells the story of Steve, a line manager, who has a crisis on his hands. His only way out is to improve his hiring performance, quickly. With some luck and lots of help from some interesting co-workers, Steve discovers the Profile-Attract-Predict System, learns its secrets, and puts it to work. As he compares his results with previous hires he made, he comes to truly understand the basic principles. The short story format ensures that even the busiest manager will have time to absorb the key concepts, which can be applyed immediately to any hiring challenge. The Profile-Attract-Predict system works. Once you taste the results that hiring better people will produce for you, you'll become a believer too. - Barbara Anderson, Vice President, US State & Local Government Health & Human Services, EDS Corporation

Review

A simple story that can help almost any manager hire better. After making a number of less-than-terrific hiring decisions over the years, I could feel the pain of Steve, the main character. It s amazing how little most managers know about effective hiring practices, and how little they are taught in formal training and education programs. I liked the way the book showed me how to put the basic principles to work, without getting bogged down in theory. The compact, story-based approach is perfect for busy managers who know they need to hire more effectively since their career depends on it but who have limited time to figure it all out. I was truly rooting for Steve as the book progressed, even though I knew he would succeed. I ordered a copy for each of my managers. --Susan Redfield, Coral Group
