MARTYRS & MONSTERS by Robert Dunbar "The demented lovechild of Faulkner and King" ~ HellNotes Robert Dunbar has been called one of the "saviors of contemporary dark fiction" and an "avatar of literary horror." Martyrs & Monsters runs the gamut of this extraordinary author's narrative range, embracing vampires and sea serpents, werewolves and swamp creatures . . . as well as a host of nightmares for which no names exist. Whether set on an orbiting space station or within a haunted tenement, these terrifying tales are steeped in a passionate intensity that renders them all but unique within the genre, and all boast a sophistication that qualifies them as that rarest of rare commodities: horror for intelligent adults. From the Inside Flap:
Author's Note
Between many of these tales, the links will seem evident. For instance, RED SOIL clearly furthers the arc of GRAY SOIL. Some connections, however, may prove less apparent, as in the case of ARE WE DEAD YET? (which only gradually reveals itself as a prequel to GETTING WET). Even less obviously, the throwaway children of LIKE A STORY evolved - at least in my mind - into the young outlaws of KILLING BILLIE'S BOYS.
Still ... themes of longing and seclusion unite them all. The original Gothic horror tales focused on personalities deformed through loneliness. Ghouls, vampires, werewolves: all made, not born.
But the isolation? Are even such as these ever truly alone? Perhaps the psyche has always been more complex than that, desire eternally more potent than terror. Surely, none prowl entirely in solitude. Every hunchback has his gypsy, each phantom his diva, and flames of passion consume witches and martyrs alike. For any lonely monster, tradition demands one sacrificial soul seek immolation.
Ashes to ashes.
It remains the ultimate, transformative act of love.
