Synopsis

McDonnell Aircraft Corportion developed the RF-4B variant of the Phantom II to meet a U.S. Marine Corp need for tactical aerial reconnaissance. These aircraft were deployed, during the course of their service life with USMC units VMCJ-1, VMCJ-2, VMCJ-3 and VMFP-3. These units provided valuable aerial reconnaissance following the Cuban Missile Crisis and throughout the Vietnam conflict.

This work covers the development and production of the RF-4B and detailed service histories of each Marine Corp unit during the periods they operated the Phantom. A detailed appendix includes the service life histories for each RF-4B manufacturer - from deliver to final disposition.

Liberally illustrated with drawings and photographs, this historical reference work contains over 100 drawings and 400 color photographs. Everything from detailed cockpit layout drawings to the various paint schemes used by the individual operating units.

About the Author

Lee R. DeHaven is a noted historian of the F-4 Phantom series and has contributed numerous articles and stories about the aircraft to numerous publications including Smoke Trails, the journal of the Phantom Society. This book culminates 10 years of research and writing on the RF-4B.

Co-author Richard Rentrop is a member of the Phantom Society and has provided many of the illustrations in the book.
