How work becomes prayer: Reflections on a Catholic doctrine of work.
This is truly a book of gems. Saints, popes, mystics, describe how work, the ordinary things we do in our workaday lives, connects us to God. How work itself can and should be a form of prayer. Listen to their voices:
"When you undertake some special endeavor, do not concentrate your attention and heart on it, but look upon it as something secondary; and by entire surrender to God open yourself to God's grace, like a vessel laid out ready to receive it.¿ However painstaking our work, so long as we omit to surrender ourselves to God while performing it, we fail to attract God's grace¿ Our efforts will be rightly directed so long as we preserve self-abasement, contrition, fear of God, devotion to Him, and the realization of our dependence upon divine help. If we are self-satisfied and content with our efforts, it is a sign that they are not performed in the right way, or that we lack wisdom."
Theophan The Recluse
"I have never heard Him speak, but I know that He is within me. He guides and inspires me every moment of the day. Just when I need it, a new light shines on my problems. This happens not so much during my hours of prayer as when I'm busy with my daily work."
Ste. Thérèse of Lisieux

B. E. Scott is a Third Order Dominican. A former Protestant minister and missionary to New York's art world, his journey to the Catholic faith took him through military service as an interpreter (Russian, Vietnamese), work as a contributing editor of Columbia Encyclopedia and a brief literary career as published poet, feature-writer, and award-winning short story writer. Following his conversion, he was blessed with wise spiritual directors who led him into the riches of Catholic and Orthodox tradition, especially as it concerns our workaday lives. With a group of like-minded, he formed Logos Corporation, an international high-tech company dedicated to God, and whose technical endeavors were explicitly influenced by this spiritual understanding of work. The remarkable, improbable history of this enterprise is told in this book. g).
