About the Author

When a child is having trouble with math, parents and students first go to the teacher for extra help. When that doesn t work, they get a math tutor. When even that doesn t work, they go to Arvin Vohra.

In 2001, Arvin Vohra founded Arvin Vohra Education (AVE), with a vision that defied the limits assumed by ordinary education. Determined to develop a system that could allow any student to excel at math, Arvin Vohra developed an approach that targeted core cognitive skills while developing the student s knowledge base. Soon, he was achieving dramatic successes: with his programs, students were moving from the absolute bottom of their math classes to the absolute top. Students who were naturally bad at math were learning to excel at math. As word spread in the Washington, DC area, AVE soon had the highest rates and longest waiting lists in the area.

In 2005 he wrote SAT Math Cognition, an e-book that gave students in-depth walkthroughs for every math problem in the College Board s Official SAT Study Guide for the New SAT. This e-book enjoyed rapid popularity among both students and SAT tutors nationwide. A few months later he released Vocabulary Synapse a vocabulary book in e-book format that helps students develop an advanced vocabulary by using word associations. The word groups include synonyms, words with common roots, and commonly associated words (e.g. flora and fauna).

During this time, Arvin Vohra began speaking at schools and to parent and community groups in the Washington, DC area. Because of his unique perspective, passion, and ability to inspire both parents and students about the importance of math, he was soon speaking regularly at schools, PTA meetings, parent groups, cultural groups, and homeschooling groups.

In 2006, AVE introduced the Accelerated Math Curriculum, a set of curricular enhancements that would allow American schools to surpass their counterparts in Europe and Asia. In 2007, AVE introduced the Integrated SAT Math Curriculum, which allowed schools to integrate superior SAT preparation into their existing curricula. In 2006, AVE also began to offer teacher training for math teachers at private schools. Later that year, AVE began offering tutoring via Skype, allowing AVE to reach a global audience.

Arvin Vohra's passion for educational innovation began at a surprisingly early age. Frustrated by the limitations he perceived in standard education, he began to test the limits of a different type of approach. He learned algebra in a few weeks to advance a level in math, and even attended college courses as early as eighth grade. In high school, he received a score of 5 on 10 AP exams to become an AP National Scholar. For 6 of those exams, he did not take the corresponding AP class, and instead relied on intensive outside study. He was also a National Merit Finalist, with the highest SAT and PSAT scores in his graduating class.

At Brown University, his passion for educational innovation continued to grow. He worked as a tutor and teacher as part of the Wheeler School's Aerie Program. At Wheeler, he designed accelerated and nontraditional curricula for students ranging from second to eighth grade. Later, he worked as a consultant for the Hamilton Institute for Learning Differences. After graduating from Brown University with a B.Sc. in mathematics, he received perfect scores on both the GRE and the GMAT, finishing each test with well over an hour to spare. He also passed two actuarial exams in a single testing period while working as an actuary at GEICO.
