Synopsis
Major Taylor, the black American cyclist and 1899 World Sprint Champion, was the highest paid and most famous athlete in what was then the world’s most popular and lucrative sport. Spectators packed stadiums in North America, Europe and Australasia to watch him race. In the United States, however, his white rivals’ racial bigotry, hatred, threats, and dangerous and dirty riding tactics became intolerable. It was in Australia, in 1904, facing his American arch enemy, that hostilities came to a head.

About the Author
Jim Fitzpatrick was born in Elkton, MD, and grew up in southern California where he graduated from UCLA. After serving with the Peace Corps in El Salvador, he moved to Australia, where he has spent most of his adult life and professional career. He earned a PhD in Human Sciences at the Australian National University. He has been Director of Major Gifts for the Salvation Army in Arizona, Executive Administrator of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, Project Director for a National Library of Australia Oral History Project, Research Officer with the Education Department of Western Australia, an urban planner in southern California, and has taught in the Geography Departments of the Universities of Natal, Western Australia and New England. He is the author of several books and numerous articles and reports on health, education, urban planning, cycling and history. The Australian Logie Award winning film, 'Tracks of Glory' was based on his book, 'Major Taylor in Australia'.
