Synopsis

For Teobaldo Noriega, the poem is a verbal construct that allows him to create an intimate space which leaves no room for the officiant of strange ceremonies, the heroic protagonist who always looks good in his self-portrait, or that dark abstract hollow of the absent individual which certain modernity proposals have accustomed us to. Here, the poem’s persona is a modest and not false reflection of the poet who at once seeks to express and discover himself in his daily words, without elevating the tone more than the occasion deserves, and always peaceably in dialogue with the reader as equal and accomplice... And through this poetics of the familiar word shared often with a companion, a friendly reader, or a beloved woman, the great themes in the poetry of Teobaldo Noriega are those which, deep down, matter to us all: time which undoes us, love and friendship as two forms of the same energy of the heart, the awareness of the world in the violent contraposition between nature and human history, the heartbeat of death. Everyone’s themes, sure, but themes that in our author’s poetry take on that breadth of intimate truth which enables them to be shared. —Francisco Díaz De Castro Universitat de les Illes Balears (Spain)
