9780981767246: Supervision of the Problem Employee

Synopsis

Problem employees are a reality faced by every organization. Supervisors are likely to spend 90% of their time dealing with those problem employees-far out of proportion, since they probably make up only about 10% of personnel. Let's call them the 10%. If you're a supervisor, you probably know all about the 10%. But you might be less willing to admit that poor supervision is often the real cause of problem employees. This book discusses how supervisors often create and foster an environment that allows problem employees to exist and thrive. What role should supervisors play in addressing the issues of problem employees? What popular management concepts are undermining the expectation of a supervisor's response to problem employees? Topics covered include: Why supervisors fail: character weaknesses and training deficiencies. Ways that poor supervision corrupts an organization. Common excuses given by supervisors for not supervising problem employees and why these excuses fail. Tips that every supervisor should know when disciplining an employee. Suggestions for department policy that minimizes the influence of problem employees. Discover how neglectful and complacent supervisors contributed to a series of scandals that propelled a Northern California fire department into the national spotlight, leading to embarrassment and public ridicule. Supervision of the Problem Employee takes a hard but truthful look at the crucial role supervisors play in responding to problem employees. You ll also learn what happens to an organization's culture when supervisors fail to supervise employees.
