PreSchool-Grade 1—Intended as teaching tools for beginning readers, these books feature sentences for each letter of the alphabet and stories with rhyming words. Magic Letters uses five words for each letter and loosely connects them with a common theme, as "Beach Bb" with ball, bucket, boat, boardwalk, and beach. The text increases in difficulty to "Zoo Zz" with Zed, zinnia, zeppelin, zucchini, and zebra. Each uncluttered page pairs the featured word with a cartoon illustration in bright colors and in large, easy-to-read text. Magic Words uses similar illustrations to expand the action in the simple sentences of each story. "We Ran" shows Dan and Jan running across a green hill to find Nan. Children of different races are featured in the first book but not in the second. Introductory notes to adults suggest the most effective ways to use the texts; back matter relates the books to kindergarten and first-grade curricula.
