The Thousandth Thumbnail is a visual art book for illustrators that explores the dynamic realm of concept development through a wide variety of thumbnails and studies. The book provides examples of shape, silhouette, light and shadow, positive and negative, line, and line-in-perspective thumbnails. Select thumbnails and studies are developed into final compositions, leading the viewer on a journey from concept development to composition completion. Covering a range of media from graphite and ballpoint pen to digital, the initial studies breathe to life as illustrations.

Joko Budiono lives and teaches art in San Francisco. Born in Indonesia, he grew up fascinated by cartoons and developed a keen appreciation for visual art. After studying at the Academy of Art University, Joko collaborated with Leandro Ng and Thomas Denmark to write and illustrate an artist's manual in applying and mastering the principles of perspective, Creative Layout: Perspective for Artists (out of print). Joko's follow-up book, The Thousandth Thumbnail, continues his exploration of concept development and composition. These days, Joko enjoys teaching and watching his students' abilities grow, while also preparing illustrations for his next book.
