On May 10, 2005, Dr. Samuel J. Hassenbusch's life took an unforeseen turn. It was on this day, that after 20 years of being a neurosurgeon he was diagnosed with the disease he has spent his life treating: Brain Cancer known as Glioblastoma.
Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Sam had aspirations to be a neurosurgeon at a young age. Upon graduating high school at the age of 17 to pursue medical school, he married Rhonda Warner. They then relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where Sam earned his Bachelor s degree, M.D., and Ph.D. all from Johns Hopkins University and Medical School. After completion of his Ph.D., Sam accepted a position as the head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Section of Neuro-Pharmacologic Oncology and Pain Management, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Then in 1993 he and his family, including Rhonda and 3 children, relocated to Houston, Texas, to practice neurosurgery at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center until his untimely departing.
After the diagnosis of brain cancer and given Sam s practice of medicine, he wanted to be a six-foot lab rat and try out new medical combinations to help reduce if not eliminate the tumor in his brain. During this time, Sam realized that as a brain surgeon turned brain cancer patient, he was in a unique position to inspire others and he chose to share his story of cancer combined with his knowledge as a doctor.
Dr. Samuel J. Hassenbusch devoted his life to his work that of healing people. In his spare time he loved to ride his motorcycle, travel around the world, spend time with his family and two dogs, watch movies, and increase his knowledge of history and the Bible. Sam also had a great love for the outdoors and backpacking, which is evidenced by his various trips on the renowned Appalachian Trail.
Sam's journey as a doctor turned patient was a 33 month battle which included many ups and downs. This book was written throughout the cancer journey to inspire hope that just because the diagnosis of cancer, life does not end.
-The next year of my life flashed in front of my eyes. Having cared for brain cancer patients for twenty years, I knew the drill the whole nine yards. I saw, as if on a high-definition giant-screen TV, all the inevitable treatments, the disability, the burdens and worries my family would carry, especially Rhonda my dear wife and soul-mate of thirty-five years. Many thoughts, worries, and upcoming decisions circled endlessly through my mind that night. And it s what I went through in the hours immediately after seeing that MRI scan that prompted me to write this book.
