About the Author:

Dr. María Alma González Pérez is a biliteracy expert and champion for bilingual and dual language education. She believes that it is very important for Hispanic children to read more about their culture. In so doing, they will gain a greater appreciation of their culture and take greater pride in themselves, in their people, and in their history. She has over 40 years of experience in the field of education and is a former director for the University of Texas Pan American in the Rio Grande Valley. She has a BA in English & Spanish and an MA in Spanish from Texas Women s University. Her doctorate is in bilingual education from Texas A&M University Kingsville. Her research is on academic achievement of Hispanic students, and on the Spanish influence in the United States. She is a frequent invited speaker at numerous bilingual and early childhood education conferences throughout Texas and the US.
