9780982344507: Trade on the Taos Mountain Trail
Trade on the Taos Mountain Trail is a non-fiction social science book (48 pages, full color) describing the concept of trade for 4th and 5th graders using education standards for social studies including history, geography, economics and civics. The book describes the movement of traders and their goods from Taos and Taos Pueblo (national historic sites, New Mexico) to El Pueblo Trading Post (a national historic site, Pueblo, Colorado) to the eastern plains at Bent s Old Fort (National Park). The text begins with the trade routes established by the Native Americans across north and central America and proceeds to the Camino Real of New Spain. The Santa Fe Trail extended from Independence, MO to Mexico City, Mexico.

Review:
As co-chair of the Santa Fe Trail National Historic Trail Advisory Council, I advocated for the development of materials that were designed to teach about the trail as well as the persons involved. This monograph not only teaches about the trail but also takes a multi-cultural perspective in focusing on a young audience through visual aides. The focus on the Taos Trapper Trail as a component of the Santa Fe Trading system adds greatly to historic knowledge in an entertaining fashion. Dr. David A. Sandoval, Professor of History, Colorado State University-Pueblo --Dr. David A. Sandoval, Professor of History, Colorado State University-Pueblo

Trade on the Taos Mountain Trail by Deborah Martinez Martinez is very well researched and the illustrations enhance a history that has gone neglected for too long. The time period 1840-1860 on the American Frontier is very important because it was the beginning of trading between many people and cultures. Although it seems like a million years ago to children, Martinez Martinez puts it in proper perspective when she says, 1840 was only four grandmothers ago or 150 years when Colorado and Wyoming were part of the Louisiana Purchase and New Mexico was on the northern frontier of the new country of Mexico. Relive the past in this delightful book that helps us understand the resourcefulness and courage of the people who lived on the Frontier. Charlene Garcia Simms, Hispanic Resource Librarian, Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library, Pueblo, CO --Charlene Garcia Simms, Hispanic Resource Librarian, Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library, Pueblo, CO

Trade on the Taos Mountain Trail is a thorough, easy-to grasp and beautifully designed resource for young students. Deborah Martinez-Martinez, Ph.D. broadens the view of the frontier beyond American Trade, with early timelines, diversity, occupational and biographical sketches. She dares to address captivity, the whiskey trade, and succeeds in the telling that over centuries, a great number of people transported goods over mountains and plains to trade. The images by Robert W. Pacheco expertly illustrate frontier life, fashion and objects. No doubt adults will enjoy viewing them and gleaning facts from this book as well."
