Synopsis

Sometimes we wish for things we just can’t have. It doesn’t matter how much we want them or how hard we try. In this rhyming tale set in the High Arctic, the author sets out to photograph walrus. The walrus are always beyond her reach because of tides, the way the ice is breaking up, and other things beyond her control. The disappointed author uses colored cartoons to tell about the things she had hoped to see. She includes color photos she took in the Arctic, as well as information about walrus. “Just Once to See a Walrus” is a book for children who enjoy reading and listening to rhymes, and for those who like reading to them. It includes maps of the world and the Canadian Arctic, a question-and-answer section, a glossary, and the scientific classification of the walrus. Stories for kids can be both fun and educational. “Just Once to See a Walrus” helps children to: (1) exercise their imaginations, (2) learn about walrus and the Canadian High Arctic, (3) understand that they can’t always get what they want, and (4) build their vocabularies by learning words they might not know.
