Synopsis

In the second edition of this popular book, the authors added two chapters and converted all programming exercises to Python 3.

Mathematics for the Digital Age and Programming in Python is written in the same engaging not-for-dummies style as the Litvins' earlier books, but it is aimed at younger students. It offers a unique blend of mathematics and programming, designed to give students in introductory computer science courses an appreciation for the rigorous mathematics relevant to computing, as well as practical skills for writing programs.

The vision behind this book is that math and computer science should help each other. A programmer needs to be comfortable with abstractions, and that is precisely what math teaches. Computer science reciprocates by providing models and hands-on exercises that help clarify and illustrate more abstract math. Most importantly, both teach "precision thinking" an important means of solving problems that call for exact solutions.

Python was chosen because it is a popular commercial programming language that is well-supported, easy to get started with, and free. Python has many powerful features intended for software professionals, but it also has a convenient subset accessible to beginners.

Some students may choose to study AP Computer Science in high school, or major in CS in college. Others may decide to go into math, science, law, art, social sciences, or humanities. Regardless of your goals, Mathematics for the Digital Age and Programming in Python will help you gain a better understanding of the computerized world around you.

About the Author

Maria Litvin has taught computer science and mathematics at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, since 1987. She is an AP Computer Science exam reader since 1996 and provides AP training for high school computer science teachers. Maria is a recipient of the 1999 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement for Mathematics, Science, and Technology for New England and of the 2003 RadioShack National Teacher Award. Prior to joining Phillips Academy, Maria taught computer science at Boston University.

Maria is a co-author (with Gary Litvin) of Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java, now in its fourth edition. Maria and Gary also co-wrote C++ for You++, and more recent Java Methods A & AB: Object-Oriented Programming and Data Structures, the textbook used for AP CS courses in hundreds of schools. Since 1999, Maria and Gary co-wrote questions for the Continental Mathematics League contests in computer science; this collection is now available in the book 250 Multiple-Choice Computer Science Questions in Java (Skylight Publishing, 2008). Their latest book is Mathematics for the Digital Age and Programming in Python (Skylight Publishing, 2008), now in its second edition (2010).

Gary is the founder and chief technical contributor of Skylight Software, Inc. In 1985 he developed and put on the market software products SKYLIGHTS/GX, a GUI rapid prototyping tool and HANDPRINTS, a set of routines for on-line handwritten character recognition. More recently, Gary participated in various contract software development projects, such as OCR (optical character recognition), and credit card fraud detection, and developed data analysis tools and neural networks software.

Prior to starting his own company, Gary was Director of Software at MicroTouch Systems, Inc., in Woburn, Mass. and Senior Member of Technical Staff at GTE Laboratories (now Verizon Laboratories).
