The Wind in the Woods is a family saga about a man's commitment to the legacy of North Carolina's Green River Valley and to the camp he built to share its wonders. Charismatic widower Tiger Morrison has spent a lifetime saving children from nature-deficit disorder, only to find himself in the fight of his life to protect his undisturbed world from land-grabbing developers in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. He's also fighting to win Katie Warlick, but she can't forgive him for not wanting her the way she wanted him 20 years earlier.
While Tiger is involved in the struggle to save his camp, his daughter, Sammy, is trying to find her place in the clannish realm of summer youth camps. As she searches for her identity, she never suspects that a serial killer is stalking her. Author Rose Senehi used the confession of an actual serial killer who murdered hikers in the North Georgia mountains in 2008 to create the plot line in which the murderer stalks both Sammy and Katie.

As I was sitting down to write The Wind in the Woods, the news media was running stories about a couple in their eighties from Hendersonville, NC, that had gone missing. I followed the story while writing my novel, which takes place in the same area, and was heart-broken to find out that the couple had been killed while hiking in the Pisgah National Forest, a stone's throw from the camp in my story.
Shortly after these murders, Gary M. Hilton confessed to the murder of 24-year-old Meredith Emerson who went hiking with her dog in the Northern Georgia mountains on New Year's Day 2008 and never returned. He is also the sole suspect in the killing of John and Irene Bryant, the elderly couple.
These tragic and pointless crimes deeply affected me, and I didn't want their lesson to fade away, so I inserted a sub-plot using the transcript of the confession to Meredith's murder to create a drifter who stalks a counselor when she leaves the camp every week on her day off to hike the Blue Ridge. I used the same time-line as the search for the Bryants as well as the dialogue from the confession. The headline for a review by Deirdre Parker Smith in the Salisbury Post, Salisbury, NC, sums up the novel with, "A little romance, a little murder and a lesson."
Rose Senehi has published five novels. The Wind in the Woods is the second in a series that takes place in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. The first, In the Shadows of Chimney Rock, was a finalist for the 2009 SIBA Book Award for fiction. She splits her time between her homes in Chimney Rock, North Carolina, and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
