Designed twenty years ago, it draws on natural systems and uses the region's abundant sunshine to create a cool oasis in Europe's hottest city. Not only is it a pioneering demonstration on how technology can be harnessed to resolve environmental challenges, The Pavilion revealed how important lessons evolve from regional architectural responses. The Systems section describes new approaches to vertical circulation in office buildings in an effort to increase efficiency for both area and daily operation. The idea of using innovative design interventions with older office buildings is also explored as a positive alternative to the typical solution of tear down and rebuild. In Melbourne, Australia the undulating geometry of Southern Cross Station effectively harnesses prevailing winds, providing all ventilation and cooling for the station hall. The Structures section examines spider web inspired cable netting and the origami-style folding of steel plates.
