"After 80 years, I am at last aware that my faith is deeply roots in nature." With these words prize-winning author Tolbert McCarroll begins his new book. Brother Toby, as he is better known, is a unique monk, spiritual writer and storyteller. Hans Kung has described him as a person of courage and creativity leading "to new forms of spiritual life and social involvement." In Seasons Brother Toby uses the experience of Starcross, his small and inclusive monastic community in Northern California, as a background for a month-by-month contemplative journey through the year. For a broader perspective, he adds excerpts from the 1874 Shaker Journal of Elder Otis Sawyer of Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Brother Toby speaks to the inner monk of people leading everyday lives. He treats some festivals as "rest stops" in the annual journey through the seasons and suggests authentic and nourishing ways to celebrate them. In the manner of his popular A Winter Walk, Brother Toby once again captures the sense of the sacred in daily life.

Tolbert McCarroll, better known as Brother Toby, has lived by Meister Eckhart's adage that what a person acquires by contemplation should be spent in compassion. He is a highly respected spiritual guide for people on many paths and journeys. An award-winning author of 10 books, including, A Winter Walk, Notes from the Song of Life, and Childsong, Monksong, Brother Toby is a founding member of Starcross Monastic Community. A former attorney for humanitarian causes, he has for 50 years, ventured forth in response to children and others in need. As his long-time colleague Sister Marti puts it, "He is an old lion now -- but he is still a lion!" The adoptive father of several children, he has established homes for children oppressed by the AIDS pandemic in California, Romania and Uganda. At Starcross he writes daily. In recent years he has had a special concern for the spiritually wounded and those disappointed by their faith communities. At 80 he is increasingly looking for God in the ordinary moments of life. Despite occasional medical challenges, he takes great delight in his children, nature, a cup of tea, music, his greenhouse, the olive groves, and his cats -- stately Cyrano and feisty Tigger, who are his constant companions.
