Synopsis

Are you ready for the zombie apocalypse? With this book, the answer is an unqualified yes! "The Do-it yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse" is your indispensable resource for battling the un-live. This satirical self-help guide is a humorous look at the apocalyptic rise of the un-living, flesh eating hordes. With tongue firmly in cheek the guide takes a logical approach to defining zombies and laying out just what needs to be done to survive. Beginning with Zombology 101, and moving through, planning, preparation, travel, weapons, combat, and companions, the guide emphasizes common sense and preparedness over a set of hard and fast rules. Along the way the guide presents a new set of terms for discussing things zombie and even includes a cookbook for meals on the go.

About the Author

Bud Hanzel: Originally from Chicago, Bud has held a variety of jobs, including; security guard, home medical technician, retail store stock clerk, librarian and mail carrier. Unable to find success doing honest work, he decided to become a writer. He achieved some notoriety in the small-press comics field, writing for Now Comics, Big Bang Comics and Sundragon Comics. After having a dream about zombies overrunning the world, he knew that he had a duty to help humanity survive the zombie s attack. With this book, he hopes to accomplish exactly that. He lives in Minnesota with his cats, Nemo, Nala and Ashcan. John Olson: Raised in the Minneapolis area, John has traveled extensively through Europe and Central America (the latter courtesy of the U.S. Air Force). After his stint in the Air Force, he enrolled in and later graduated from Iowa State University with a Masters of Fine Arts degree in graphic design. His checkered career includes; typesetter, production designer, frame store manager, editor-in-chief of a small press comic book company and college professor (some of his students even learned something). Sharing Bud's concern about impending zombie attack, he co-authored this book to help ensure humanity's continuation. He lives in Minnesota. Mark Stegbauer (Illustrator): Mark grew up on the West Coast, scribbling drawings on every piece of paper he could lay his hands on. He eventually became one of the comics industry s most accomplished and respected inkers. He has worked with just about every penciller in the field and has inked virtually every major character. His first foray into penciling and inking was on the critically acclaimed Four Uncles of the Apocalypse . He has long known about the coming zombie apocalypse, and illustrated this book in an effort to get the word out to the masses. He lives in Eastern Wisconsin.

Review

The Do-it-yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, by Bud Hanzel and John Olson. Illustrations by Mark Stegbauer I've only reviewed one other zombie survival type book so I thought it was time for another. That was when John Olson contacted me. The timing was perfect on John's side. I agreed to do a review and he sent me a PDF copy of the book. I finished reading this wonderful guide in a few sittings. I'd like to thank John and Bud for supplying me with a copy and also for giving me the opportunity to review their work. Since this is a zombie survival book trying to come up with a plot summary is very tricky. I will not even try to attempt it. I will, however, talk about what is mentioned in the book. Bud Hanzel and John Olson do a magnificent job describing everything a person will need to survive the zombie apocalypse. They cover locations, how to choose them, which to stay away from, why to pick this location over that one? They are very precise and give in depth thoughts about picking certain locations and avoiding others. Another thing they cover is choosing the correct tools for the job. In a zombie apocalypse most people will panic and forget that tools can be used for other unintended uses. I will try not to give away too much because this information is covered thoroughly in the book. Ever wonder why the dead rise? Well they also cover explanations for the dead coming back to life, or un-life , according to their guide . There is just so much information in this short book that I cannot possibly sum everything up in this review. Instead, I will move on to my thoughts on the book. I loved it. It s as simple as that. The Do-it-yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is brilliantly written and very entertaining. The authors do a fantastic job bringing this information to the reader while making them chuckle. I laughed out loud a few times while reading the book. Another good thing about this book is that I got the feeling that Bud and John genuinely care for the reader's safety, even though zombies are not a real threat. Something to look forward to is the illustrations. There are images on every page that go along with what is being mentioned in the text. Some are outrageously hilarious. The pictures with cartoon figures in real life backgrounds are my favorite. Artist Mark Stegbauer, does a magnificent job illustrating the book to perfection. Another thing I noticed that not many authors do is how well they know firearms. They do not call magazines clips , they actually use proper firearm terms. Either they are firearm fanatics or they did some cold hard research. I also like how they used firearm images when they reference a specific gun. That really helps the readers understand what they are talking about. The Do-it-yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is the kind of book that I can go on for hours talking about. I try to limit myself to a specific word count on reviews to stop me from doing that. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and entertaining read. I will have to give The Do-it-yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, 5 Undead Heads out of 5. --Lyle Perez - undeadinthehead ----Lyle Perez - undeadinthehead

The DIY Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse By The Zombiephile When it comes to zombie survival guides, up until now there haven t been too many choices. Max Brooks bestselling Zombie Survival Guide is the first one that springs to mind, mostly since it was one of the first ones to hit the market. The thing about zombie survival, though, is that if you overspecialize, you breed in weakness. That s why we here at the Zombiephiles are pretty stoked to announce the DIY Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, a new zombie survival guide that s about to hit the market. In a lot of ways, it s one of the best (and funniest) we ve come across so far. Written by Bud Hanzel and John Olson and hilariously illustrated by Mark Stegbauer, the Do-It Yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is published by Hanson Press and is due to be published sometime in the very near future. It s chock full of no-frills, dead-simple advice that every Zombiephile should have before they set out to survive the zombie apocalypse. The DIY Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse goes far beyond simply providing survival tips on zombie survival it digs deep into the cult of zombie to answer such fascinating questions as how do zombies tell humans apart from other zombies and what would happen to zombies once all the humans run out? It s more than just a survival guide it s an entire investigation of the entirety of zombie culture. Written with a lighthearted sense of humor and an attention to detail that borders on the maniacal, the Do-It-Yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is a surprisingly beefy tomb that will keep you coming back for more time and time again. It covers almost every aspect of a post-zombie-apocalypse that you could possibly think of, and several that you probably would never have thought of if they hadn t suggested them to you. In short, if you love zombies, or more importantly if you hate zombies, and you have any concerns whatsoever about your ability to survive the inevitable zombie apocalypse; you should probably pick this book up when it comes out. Come to think of it, even if you think you re completely prepared for the coming zombie outbreak, you should probably pick this book up anyway you ll be surprised at how many things about zombies you never thought of or even remotely considered. And the illustrations are wicked funny. --Rob Bono - zombiephiles

The DIY Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse Review by ZC Barry I was lucky enough to get an unfinished copy of The DIY Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse recently, ahead of it s August release date. It s another foray into the world of zombie survival books, kick-started by Max Brooks with the original Zombie Survival Guide and recently continued by Roger Ma and his Zombie Combat Club book. It s a 160 page illustrated look into John Olson and Bud Hanzel s vision of the zombocalypse; treading a fine line between research, intuition and supposition. The DIY Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse opens with a look into zombie biology and, instead of saying specifically what will cause the outbreak, classifies any number of possibilities of zombism as a catch all Zombie Transforming Agent (ZTA). What they are clear about though is that zombies are dead or at least undead. No 28 Days Later Rage infected humans to worry about in this version. The bulk of the book isn t filled with hard, fast rules but rather suggestions on how to think for yourself: planning, the types of people you want to surround yourself with (or avoid), an example outbreak, a decent cookbook and a list of resources to help you train in the skills you ll need when the uprising begins. Thinking on your feet is going to be much more valuable to you than only having one way out. Think about it, MacGuyver will probably do quite well when the zombies come. Despite this early version still missing many images there are descriptions for them and the many that are already there really illustrate the points being made. Every page is interesting to look at and Mark Stegbauer s style really suits the book. I do however, have a few issues with The DIY Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse. The description of zombie physiology and zombie behavior is well rationalized though lacks any real scientific analysis bite behind it, pushing it into the same realms of fantasy as the Zombie Survival Guide. There is also discussion of the soul and spiritual side of zombies and, despite making it clear that there is no longer any spirit, in my opinion this detracts from any scientific credibility they may have earned from their thought process. Also, while it s is a fun and informative read it s not really the sort of survival guide you ll be clinging onto while evading those newly risen. It s the sort of thing you ll read over to get clear in your head but then more than likely carry one of the suggested books in the appendices in your bug out bag. That said it is well worth a read, even for those who think they know it all as you re only really prepared when you re prepared for your plan to go horribly wrong. --ZC Barry - zombiecommand
