PREFACE A Guide to the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) is now in its 4th edition. Each new edition of the EMBOK guide represents a significant step forward in the lifecycle of this important publication. The original publication was developed and edited by a group of subject matter experts assembled by a subsidiary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) designated as Engineering Management Certification International (EMCI). Subsequent editions had considerable input from ASEM, and starting with the 3rd edition, the copyright moved to ASEM. This new 4th edition contains major upgrades to the content and format. The current content represents the best information available in the field of engineering management. In preparing this edition, special attention was given to including more content covering engineering management in the international arena. For example, changes have been made to the Financial Resource Management domain to provide a more global flavor. Content areas are added to the Strategic Management, Legal Issues in Engineering Management, and the Professional Codes of Conduct and Ethics domain to keep up with the updates in the industry. The 4th edition is the foundation for the ASEM professional certification program available at two levels, Associative Engineering Manager (AEM) and Professional Engineering Manager (PEM). In addition, this edition serves as a guide for ASEM sanctioned training programs, curriculum development, program certification, and a framework for many such advances in the field. Developing such a guidebook was made possible because of the time and efforts put in by a number of volunteers who are subject matter experts. They are acknowledged in this edition. ASEM is proud to publish this guide and hopes that the reader will find it informative and useful in understanding and learning about engineering management.
