"...without faith, it is impossible to please God",  rang in my mind.  God placed this book in my spirit.  It sat as a barren seed for many years.  Finally it began to grow and take on shape.  Enslaved Africans carried their secrets in aural/oral codes that became the foundation for folk music in America.  Spirituals, work and plantation songs, blues and jazz, gave expression to the life of the"hue person" in America.

Gospel music emerged as a genre from these experiences.  God strengthened me to complete this book as I underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.  Through God's grace, caring people, and an insighful editor/project director, I was able to share this work.  People within gospel music ministry- griots- from all areas of the country, added their stories and experiences of the power of the sung gospel to change and impact people's lives.

Shifting to Africa, it shows how the African people preserved their music, their dignity and their heritage in the face of overwhelming odds while transported as human cargo to the new land of America. It travels through the history of America and its people of color, tracing the power and heritage of music to preserve and uplift the psyche of an oppressed people who fought for equality and freedom, with a song on their lips of praise God each step of the way. In Part 11, a collection of interviews with persons involved in various aspects of gospel music ministry are shared that document gospel music history.
