Barbary pirates capture Rachel and her father on a ship headed for America 200 years ago. They become slaves in Morocco and seek to escape. As present-day Sara Miller searches for her grandmother’s brother, lost in the Holocaust, she travels from Florida to Gibraltar and discovers her family’s hidden past as well as her own connection to Rachel and to Florida’s history. “A bold adventure....Chapters move quickly in a mixture of danger, excitement, and pure enjoyment...” – Foreword Online Reviews.

The grandmother of David Levy Yulee, Florida's first senator, was captured by pirates and sold to the vizier of Morocco. That's the story according to Florida folklore, and it's often mentioned in Florida history books. It's an enticing tidbit, but a credible Florida historian claims it is a fabrication. What is the true story?
The question intrigued me. To find an answer, I spent countless hours in various libraries, drove the back roads of Florida, and explored ancient cemeteries in St. Thomas and Gibraltar. I walked the planks of the frigate, USS Constellation, and toured the kasbahs of Morocco. One fascinating fact led to another, building such a mass that I was crushed by the weight of it until my friend Betty Myers said to me, "Just write a good story that people will want to read."
Eileen Haavik McIntire has ridden a camel in the Moroccan Sahara, fished for piranhas on the Amazon, sailed in a felucca on the Nile, spent the night in an Ethiopian hut, and lived for three years on a motorsailer, exploring the coast from Annapolis to Key West.
