About the Author:
Since her first published fantasy in 1982 THE TIME OF THE DARK Barbara Hambly has touched pretty much all the bases in genre fiction, including historical murder mysteries, fantasy, science fiction, comic books, graphic novels, a contemporary occult romance novella for Harlequin, and scripts for Saturday morning cartoon shows. Her most recent horror novel is BLOOD MAIDENS and her newest historical mystery is THE SHIRT ON HIS BACK, part of the Benjamin January series. Born in 1951, she grew up on science fiction and fantasy in Southern California, and attended the University of California where she received a Master's degree in Medieval History, and a black belt in karate. She attended the University of Bordeaux and traveled in Europe in 1971-72. She searched for a job that would allow her time to write, trying various positions: a high-school teacher, a model, a waitress, a technical editor, a professional graduate student, an all-night clerk at a liquor store, and a karate instructor. She has been the President of the Science Fiction Writers of America (1994-1996), a Locus award winner and Guest of Honor at many conventions over the years. She has admitted to not being good with titles for books (perhaps The Quirinal Hill Affair would not be out of print today if her original title idea, The Baby Eaters, had stuck). She enjoys many non-writing hobbies, including dancing, painting, historical and fantasy costuming (something she's enjoyed since high school), tarot card reading, and the occasional bout of carpentry. I don't know if she's still involved in SCA, but she was once a member, and has been known to attend Renaissance Festivals. She married science-fiction writer George Alec Effinger in 1998 and lived part-time in New Orleans for a number of years. Now a widow, she shares a house in Los Angeles with several small carnivores.
