Synopsis

Karen Wiswell and her daughter Kristine Wiswell Rauenhorst, both from the Twin Cities, understand the special love grandparents feel for their grandchildren. Kristine's twin boys, George and Henry, love nothing more than spending time with their grandparents. Karen's diagnosis and battle with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia inspired this mother/daughter pair to write When Grammy Comes to Play as a legacy for George and Henry. Beautifully illustrated by Shelley Dieterichs, this story serves as a reminder that the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is precious -- and if they cannot be together, they can always meet in their dreams. Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Minnesota Chapter.

From the Inside Flap

"When Kristine Rauenhorst asked if I would be interested in reviewing the book she and her mom wrote for young children, I was fascinated. A young mom of twin two-year-olds was writing a book? I was amazed that she would even have time for this. After reading why this book was written, I was so touched. It is not an easy subject to talk about with adults, let alone young children. The way Kristine and her mother, Karen, have handled the subject matter is impressive. They presented the fact that perhaps a grandparent won't always be able to be a part of your life in a gentle and beautiful format. Dreams are like a child's favorite 'lovey' -- something that they can hold on to, much easier than we can as adults."As an early childhood educator for the last 33 years, I have seen young children lose a grandparent, a pet, and even a great grandparent. Finding the right words to help a young child through this loss is difficult. They know the adults around them are sad and that something is not right in their little world. Using the book When Grammy Comes to Play as a useful tool in the classroom will allow educators to use a storybook to help children know that their loved one will always be there. The concept of a child's dream is peaceful, happy and a sacred place for young children. They feel safe with their dreams. Children will be able to look for that special person in their thoughts and dreams."I especially was drawn into the story with the wonderful and realistic portrait of Grammy. She doesn't have gray hair and walk with a cane! Preschool-age children often have grandparents that are young looking and these portraits are very close to what they know as Grammy. The colors are so peaceful, especially the blue background color. As I read and reread this book, I could feel a sense of calm throughout. Knowing the author as a parent of young preschoolers, her calmness is echoed in script of the story. The rhythm of the words allowed the text to take on a tranquil read. It was as if the words were flowing."When approaching a subject like this with young children, I would definitely use this book to reinforce to the children that Grammy will always be there for them, whether in real life or in our dreams. When Grammy Comes to Play is a beautifully written and illustrated book, and an excellent learning tool for any classroom." -- Cathy Burley, Owner, ABC Express Inc., A Christian Preschool Center "When Grammy Comes to Play is such a lovely story about the special bond and love between grandparents and their grandchildren. This beautifully written book perfectly depicts the sacred role grandmas have in helping to shape their grandchildren." -- Jenny Simmonds, Fairview Youth Grief Services program director "When Grammy Comes to Play is a sweet story children will enjoy hearing again and again. It represents a special legacy for the authors' family and one The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Minnesota Chapter is proud to be a part of."As a fellow survivor of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), and as a staff person at LLS, I have witnessed, and experienced first-hand, the special bond that is created when a family member is faced with a life-threatening disease. Karen and Kristine have shared that bond in this charming story about a grandmother and her relationship with her grandchildren. "By purchasing this book, you are supporting LLS. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. LLS is the only health organization that has dedicated 26 percent of its budget to finding cures and advancing treatments for AML. Unfortunately, the survival rate is still only 25 percent for AML and the standard care for AML patients has not changed in 40 years. LLS strives to change that with its BEAT AML initiative. Learn more about the BEAT AML initiative at: www.lls.org/beataml. Learn more about LLS at www.lls.org. Thank you for your support." --Michele Asmussen, Campaign Manager, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Minnesota Chapter
