Alyeska (Al-ee-es-ka) was born a very old soul. She came to us as a young pup, but quickly displayed her wisdom and playfulness to all who encountered her. Since her passing, numerous friends shared stories about her and how she emotionally helped them. As a longtime child and family therapist, I see common emotional themes that concern children, and find few books that address them from a child’s viewpoint. This book is first in a series combing Aly’s empathic character with stories that address children’s emotional needs. May Aly’s and Tommy’s story increase discussion between parents and their young children, to simplify this sometime-mystifying process of being a friend and making new ones. May child therapists and teachers also find this tale helpful in building social skills in their young charges.
