Competencies are the skills and behaviors that outstanding performers demonstrate more often, more skillfully, and with better results, than do average performers. Which is why organizations of all types and sizes are interested in competencies, and in the development of those competencies in their employees. In many organizations, competencies have been grouped together into job competency models which together describe successful performance for a particular job or role, in a particular organization. The Competency Development Guide will help you as an individual, or as someone responsible for another person s development, to plan and develop competencies. The guide contains a variety of worksheets and information on each of thirty-five competencies, including a definition, behaviors, importance, general considerations in developing the competency, practicing the competency, obtaining feedback for development, learning from experts, coaching suggestions for managers, sample development goals, and a listing of resources (books, online and self-study courses, and seminars).

Managers love the ease the Competency Development Guide provides and say it helps them quickly customize individual development plans that align with their model. In fact, the resource guide is so valuable, that I can never seem to find mine! When making a recent job changes, I had to promise immunity and/or anonymity to my group of managers in order to get it back. --Shannon Johnson Blue Cross Blue Shield Alabama
